Board of Directors
Monica Huff has spent the past 20 years working as an Organizational Human Factors Psychologist for the United States Navy and various forms of government. She is a founding member of Athens Road Runners and served on the first ARR Board. She was the 5th woman to run a Boston Qualifying marathon in every state. She has run 126 marathons and is going for the Abbott World Major Marathon stars with London and Berlin planned for this year. She looks forward to running more marathons, traveling to new places, and helping others pursue their running and life goals in 2023 as a leadership and performance coach.
Steve is a new member to the board. He was on the board of a Toastmasters Chapter in Atlanta for 3 years and president for two. He also served as the president of an Atlanta-based software users group for four years and president of a software vendor’s international users group for four years.
As a professional management consultant for more than 25 years, his clients were startups, non-profits, and everything up to Fortune 50 companies.
Lisa was a member of ARR during its early years. After taking a break, she is back along with her husband and loving the community feel of our group. As a former college athlete, she has run most of her life; but now she runs for the fun of it. Lisa is a local educator and reading specialist for the Oconee County School System. In her free time, she hustles to keep up with her 4 children–ages 12 to 21. She also enjoys biking, yoga, and swimming. This is Lisa’s first year on the board but has extensive experience working with groups via church, school, and community involvement. Her motto is “Run Happy!”
Dennis is a long-time ARR member but will be new to the board. However, he currently serves on a Condo Association Board in Florida and has served on quite a few other boards, both professional and social. He also was elected to the Athens Clarke County School Board. He currently is on the AthHalf race committee.
Jarrod joined the board in 2021 and has been especially active in trail running activities offered by ARR. He is an associate professor of kinesiology at UGA and teaches a course on the philosophy of running for freshmen. He also mentors his two young daughters who are becoming amazing trail runners.
Emily and her family moved to Athens in 2019 to take a faculty position at UGA. As an avid runner who has moved around as an adult, she understands the importance of a healthy, active, and welcoming running community. She been actively involved as a volunteer team leader in several running non-profit organizations, including Back On My Feet, and the Twin Cities Marathon Association. She was a founding member and served on the board of the non-profit organization Runners For Recovery. She began running marathons in her early 20’s after college. Her favorite races in town are the Milledge Mile and of course the AthHalf!
Esther van der Knaap
Esther is new to the board this year. She has previously served on a rowing club board. She runs a research lab with staff, undergrads, grad students and post-docs, which requires leadership skills and the ability to manage a large budget.
Chandler joined ARR in 2022 and is new to the Board. He moved to Athens with his wife in 2020 and currently works as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Genetics Department at UGA. Chandler is 31 years old recently became a member of the ARR Race Team.
Drew is a Pennsylvania native, joining ARR all the way from York, PA. He’s been running in Athens since he started graduate school at UGA in 2019. In 2021, he graduated with a Master’s in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. Working with ARR combines his education with his deep love for running. Looking for a running buddy? Let him know!
