WHY JOIN A RUN CLUB?

Run clubs, track clubs, and run crews have a long history in the US and an even longer history worldwide—the oldest adult cross-country group, Thames Hare and Hounds, dates back to the late 1800s. Today, running clubs are a popular form of group exercise. With pre-planned routes, a group run takes some mental effort out of running. The athletes that you meet at your local club are also great accountability partners.

WHY RUN IN ATHENS?

Nearly a quarter of Clarke County residents do not participate in physical activity as part of their lifestyle. The formal metric, “Adults With No Leisure-Time Physical Activity,” is even higher for the state (25.2%) and the country (26.7%). We live in a more active community.

Almost 60% of county residents live within a half-mile of a park. These public areas are great for getting miles on the road, track, or trails. The national average for the same access is nearly half (31.7%). There are spaces that are designed to help you stay active.

These statistics are pulled from the US News and World Report data on Clarke County, 2024.

The wall… in racing, the wall is your limit for the day. It’s when you’ve run out of the energy - whether physical or mental - to keep pushing the pace. Here, the Wall is a place for stories and news from Athens Road Runners. It’s great for post-run reading or rest-day entertainment. Settle in.
