2024 Milledge Mile Wins Bid To Host Regional Champs

The 2024 Milledge Mile is set to take place on July 27, 2024, in Athens, GA. The seventh annual race down one of the most popular streets in the Classic City has an added charm this year. The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) selected the Milledge Mile as the Southern Region One-Mile Championship race. The RRCA was formed in 1958 to help support and develop community-based running organizations. Today, the RRCA organizes an application process where running clubs can select a race their club manages and apply to host a regional competition.

The Milledge Mile was selected for the 2024 One-Mile championship in the South through a competitive bidding process. The other regional competitions chosen this year include the Annapolis 10-miler in Annapolis, Maryland, the Charleston Distance Run in Charleston, West Virginia, and the Peach Tree Classic Road Race in Atlanta, Georgia. What makes the Milledge Mile stand out is the special contribution that the race makes to the Athens community. As always, the race is a fundraiser for Athens charities. This year, proceeds will be given to both Mercy Health Center and Sirius Athletics.

For athletes, this mile race is particularly motivating because of the marginal elevation gain on the course. The Milledge Mile boasts a relatively flat, straight route that allows runners to accelerate at the top of their abilities, with roughly 16 feet of elevation gain. This year, overall male and overall female winners will be awarded a special RRCA medal, along with the traditional prize money authorized by the Athens Road Runners. The top 40+, 50+, and 60+ finishers will also receive RRCA awards. A cash bonus will be awarded to the top male if he clocks a sub-4 minute mile and the top female if she clocks a sub-4:30 minute mile.

The Road Runners Club of America’s recognition of the Milledge Mile as a competitive course is an exciting advancement for the running community in Athens, GA. The city now serves as the backdrop for events in the mile, half marathon, and full marathon. The Classic City Marathon debuted in 2024 and has recently announced the 2025 race. There’s an undeniable magic when running through Athens, Georgia. The Milledge Mile is an exciting opportunity to introduce more athletes to the charm of the Classic City.

Registration for the Milledge Mile is now open! There is no day-of registration for this race, so register early. Race officials do expect the event to host more athletes this year. If you are not racing, please consider volunteering to support local athletes and to welcome our new guests. Interested volunteers can select a shift on this form.
